Smartphone speakers play an important role as it is the sound making instrument for your Smartphone. A small speaker unit is soldered inside your Smartphones that makes sounds for various purposes.

From alerting you when you receive a phone call to firing audio when consuming media, Smartphone speakers play a vital role.

With aging, your smartphone speaker reaches its low point where it tends to work slow. A slow working speaker signifies low volume output which is a disturbing factor.

With lower volumes, ringing sound due to an incoming phone call will lessen, leading to higher chances of you missing the call.

Media consumption without a Headphone/ Headset and externally connected speakers gets disturbingly difficult with lower max speaker output volumes.

It gets even worse when you’re outside where the traceable chances of you picking up a phone call with all the external noises get closer to nil. You can surely blame it on the low speaker output from your old aging smartphone.

This can get clearly annoying and I’ve come to help you with some solutions.

Why does max-speaker volume reduce with time?

In the world of technology, there could literally be an infinite number of ways for an electronic to fail/age. Yet, I bring to you some of the most common reasons which, hopefully, is the case for you that could be fixed easily.

Natural ageing of speaker

This is a case of inevitability. Any smartphone no matter how costly and sophisticated it gets, aging is a known phenomenon that cannot be prevented whatsoever.

But, there are ways to slow down this aging phenomenon by taking good care of your Smartphone.

Presence of dust and lint in the Speaker housing

We generally keep out Smartphones in our pockets or purses. Pockets and purses are more prone to get dusty inside which we usually don’t clean as they are not visible from the outside.

Keeping smartphones inside those tends to jam and fill the Speaker housing which is usually the case for blocking the sound output.

Dust and lint are also known to cause acoustical changes and clarity loss. This can be cleaned to improve smartphone speaker output functionality.

Software updates

This is commonly seen in Asus Smartphones and Xiaomi Smartphones. These smartphones are known to provide monthly software updates that fix various bugs and glitches in your smartphone for improving software experience in overall.

Along with these Smartphone updates, there are high chances of them also having lowered the default maximum output levels. This can be fixed with 3-rd party apps or waiting for the next software update.

Deliberate output reduction by Smartphone manufactures to save battery

With an aging smartphone, the battery ages too. Hence, to maintain proper Screen on-time of your smartphone even after a year or two of having released the phone, Smartphone manufacturers tend to release software updates that deliberately lowers the maximum speaker output just to save battery life.

Smartphone manufacturers also release updates to lower the maximum CPU power and speed to extend aging and failure. Though this is not our concern in today’s topic, I would like to mention that this too can be reversed but the process might be quite complex as it requires unlocking the bootloader and flashing custom OS and suitable kernel.

Dead speaker

This is a case where the speaker has completely died. This can happen due to external as well as internal reasons.

External reasons involve contact of Speaker wiring with moisture and internal reasons involve factors like overheating and faulty circuitry.

If your Smartphone is old enough and has outed the Warranty period, it is advisable to go to a service center and get the speaker unit replaced.

Types of Audio Outputs in your smartphone

  • Output through Bottom firing speaker

This is a common speaker unit placed at the bottom of your smartphone. It is placed inside a speaker housing which could get dust and lint.

  • Output through Ear-piece speaker

This is also a common speaker unit placed at the top of your smartphone that faces towards you. This is the speaker unit on which you place your head to hear Audio when attending phone calls.

  • Output through Top Firing speaker

This speaker unit is present only on higher-end phones that adds up to sound quality and acts usually as tweeters. They are used to provide louder and dual audio output for the surround effect. These are also outdated and generally, not seen in today’s smartphones.

  • Secondary speaker that also plays role of ear-piece

These are also those speaker units present mostly in higher-end smartphones. These are used to provide the same sound effect as mentioned above. The only difference would be that these speakers also couple as an ear-piece unit.

How to Increase the Volume level?

How to safely clean Loud-Speaker to increase Volume?

  • Step 1 : Free up the speaker housing using a Toothpick

Most people are not aware of cleaning speaker grills and housing. This simple step does wonders for most smartphones.

Take a thin toothpick and gently shove it inside the speaker grill. Shove it inside till you feel soft speaker’s rubber netting. Be careful and make sure you do not pierce the netting.

Speaker nettings block dust from entering the speaker unit. Hence, you must go gentle and make sure it is not pierced.

You are doing this to free up the dust and lint that have gotten themselves stuck to the netting.

  • Step 2 : Clean the housing using a cotton earbud/ cotton swab

Now, take a cotton earbud (cotton swab) and reduce the density of cotton on top in order to make it penetrable inside your smartphone’s speaker grills.

Earbuf

Shove it inside the speaker grills and twist and spin the Cotton bud just like how you do it to ears to remove dust and lint.

Remember to be gentle in the same way as you clean your ears. You spin and move the cotton bud over the outsides of your ear to clean off the wax and you keep sure not to pierce deep inside the ear cavity as this would burst your eardrums.

In the same way, treat the speaker housing. Spin the cotton and move it around the wall of the speaker’s house but do not shove it deep inside as that would lead to rupturing the speaker netting( in comparison to eardrums).

  • Step 3 : Install Speaker Cleaner app from Playstore
Speaker Cleaner app
Speaker Cleaner app

Speaker Cleaner app uses sine wave sounds of predefined frequencies to remove dirt from the speaker. Sound waves cause the speaker to vibrate and shake off water and dirt stuck inside.

Click this link here to install Speaker Cleaner or you can manually download it from Playstore as well.

  • Step 4 : Open the app and start the cleaning process

Now, open the app and tap on “Start Cleaning“.

Make sure to keep the Volume at maximum possible setting.

As soon as you tap “Start Cleaning”, place your Smartphone in such a way that the Speaker faces DOWN.

Try not to hold the phone and place to let it vibrate freely on your table or floor.

Now Tap to select “MODE 2” and do the same process again by tapping the “Start Cleaning” button.

How to safely clean Earpiece Speaker to increase Volume?

  • Step 1 : Clean the earpiece speaker grill with toothpick

Just take a toothpick and gently rub on the Earpiece speaker grill. This should free up all the dirt stuck to it.

Make sure to be gentle with the toothpick as you do not want to pierce the netting which protects the earpiece from dirt and water.

  • Step 2 : Install the same Speaker Cleaner app on your smartphone

If you have already followed the previous step, then skip to the next step.

For those who directly skipped to this section, install the Speaker Cleaner app from Playstore. Click here to download.

  • Step 3 : Open the App and perform the cleaning process

Open the app and tap to select “Ear Speaker“.

Now, do the same process as mentioned for the Loudspeaker cleaning. Tap the “Start Cleaning” button to initiate the sinusoid frequency wave. Place the Smartphone over your touch screen such that the earpiece faces DOWN.

  • Step 4 : Mode 2 cleaning

Once, the process is done, Tap to select “Mode 2” and re-run the process.

That is it. This should have massively helped increase the Sound Volume back to its original state after cleaning.

Do not run this cleaning test continuously as this Over-heats up the speakers and could cause circuitry issues leading to short circuits. Beware and do not overdo it. Keep a check on the temperature of the speaker by placing your finger near the speaker’s grills.

After the Cleaning is performed, Uninstall the app and restart your smartphone. Also, blow forced air on the speaker grills to remove dirt that tends to escape out from the housing sticks to the outsides.

How to increase Loudspeaker Volume?

Go to Playstore and download Equalizer FX application.

Conclusion

That is it. All the possible effective ways to increase your speaker volume has been performed.

If you are still not satisfied with the process, then there are other complex ways to solve it. Search for “Unlocking Bootloader” and ” installing custom OS”. There are many Kernels suitable for your smartphone that can help you increase/ boost volume levels.

If that doesn’t suffice either, I suggest heading towards a service center and replace your speaker unit.

Cheers!!!
